Meet Our Staff


Bruce Herman

Bruce Herman, Ph.D.
Director of Health & Counseling

Dr. Herman graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He has been working in Higher Education for over 30 years and has worked extensively in the areas of mental health and health promotion. He came to UMBC in July 2012. Before UMBC he worked at Towson University Counseling Center from 1999-2012. Prior to that, from 1991-1998 Dr. Herman worked as a Psychologist at Loyola College in Maryland. Dr. Herman has also taught in the Psychology and/or Education Departments at Towson University, Loyola College and University of Illinois. He is interested in campus health promotion and in providing services that reach, serve and support the success and health of UMBC’s diverse population.

Vic Madrid

Vic Madrid, MD
Medical Director / Associate Director

Dr. Vic Madrid joined the UMBC UHS team in August 2018 after practicing comprehensive outpatient primary care for 20 years.  He also performed medical reviews for the Maryland Board of Physicians, and served on the board of directors for a large local medical group for 10 years. He received his BS degree in 1991 and his MD degree in 1995, both from the Ohio State University. He completed his residency training in 1998 at the Fairview Family Medicine Residency Program in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Madrid is board certified in Family Medicine and lives in Catonsville with his wife and 3 children, and can often be found in nearby Patapsco state park on his mountain bike, riding for personal fitness and also coaching a local youth interscholastic mountain biking team.  He is thankful for the opportunity to care for, and promote healthy habits to, our UMBC students.

Melissa Lundberg

Melissa Lundberg RN, MSN, CRNP

Melissa is a Baltimore native and has been at UMBC since 2016.  She received her undergraduate degree in Biology at Dickinson College.  She is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University’s undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner.  Prior to UMBC, she worked in the Emergency Department at Children’s National and in clinical research at Johns Hopkins Allergy and Immunology.

Cindy Vogelpohl

Cynthia “Cindy” Vogelpohl, RN

Cindy has been in healthcare for 16 years. Prior to becoming a registered nurse, she worked in administration for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for 4 years. She has been a registered nurse in Frederick County since 2004, working as a Medical Surgical Nurse for Frederick Memorial Hospital and as a Case Manager/Nurse for Hospice of Frederick County. Cindy also worked as a School Nurse for Carroll County Public Schools for the last 4 years and joined the UMBC health care team in the fall of 2016.  Cindy is currently furthering her nursing education at Frostburg State University working towards her Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner.

Kamaria Wakefield

Kamaria Wakefield, MA

Kamaria Wakefield is a native of Baltimore and joined UMBC is the fall of 2019. She received dual certification in Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy form Northwest Career College in Las Vegas, NV. Upon graduation, Kamaria has been a practicing medical assistant and phlebotomist. She has served in several clinics seeking to extend her assistance to professional healthcare providers and the entire team while working toward a common goal of compassionate and personalized patient care.


Chelsea Harris

Chelsea Harris, RN, MSN, CRNP

Chelsea Harris is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has been in practice since 2018. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at East Carolina University in 2012 and her Master of Science in Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in 2017. She has prior experience in primary care as a nurse practitioner. She has a passion to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Andrea Robinson

Andrea Robinson, RN, MSN, CRNP

Andrea Robinson is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northeastern University and her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Cincinnati. Prior to UMBC, she worked at Virginia Hospital Center and UNC Children’s Hospital. She has medical surgical and critical care experience as well as experience in dermatology. She enjoys working with patients of all ages. In addition, she is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Cindy Heibler

Cindy N. Heibler, RN, MSN, CRNP

Cindy N. Heibler, CRNP, was born and raised in Ellicott City, MD. She received a Bachelor’s in Communications from Loyola University in 2006, a Bachelor’s in Nursing from University of Maryland in 2013 and a Master’s as a Family Nurse Practitioner from University of Cincinnati in 2018. Cindy spent the last 2+ years working in pediatrics. She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland.

Cindy is married with 2 young sons. She enjoys watching her children grow, traveling, attending sporting events and volunteering.

Zahra Batool

Zahra Batool, MA, CPT

Zahra joined Retriever Integrated Health in the summer of 2021 amidst the COVID pandemic. She received her Associates degree in Biological Sciences from Montgomery College, MD. Upon graduation, she has been working as a medical assistant and phlebotomist. She received her certification in Clinical Medical Assisting from Montgomery College via National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and is also a Certified Phlebotomist Technician (CPT) from NAAHP. She completed her training and externship at My Righttime urgent care. She is driven to move forward with health career professionals to provide compassionate and better patient care.

Cheryl Benitez

Cheryl Benitez
Coordinator of Insurance and Billing

Cheryl has worked at UMBC since 2007. She supervises all insurance and billing functions within UHS. She can help answer questions you have about insurance or billing issues.

Dot Meile

Dot Meile
Business Service Specialist

Dot has worked at UMBC since 2001. She orders vaccines, medical supplies and other important products to keep UMBC students healthy. She also works in procurement, handles the payroll process and does new hire paperwork for UHS.

Je'Nae Parker

Je’Nae Parker
Office Manager

Je’Nae joined UMBC in 2017. She previously worked at University of Maryland Faculty Physicians includes providing administrative support. Her experience includes supervising call center staff, insurance billing and front desk operations. She received her BS in Applied Psychology from Coppin State University and is expecting her MS in Human Services Administration with a concentration in Health Care Delivery Systems in May 2018 from the University of Baltimore.

Stephanie currently serves UHS in the insurance and billing department. Stephanie will be able to assist you with questions regarding the school health insurance as well as other insurance plans and any billing issues that you may have. Stephanie finishing her BS degree in Business Administration/Management.

Candida “Candy” Williams
Office Clerk II

Candida started at University Health Services in January 2020 as Office Clerk II. Everyone knows her as Candy. She has a certification as a medical administrative assistant. She can help you with scheduling appointments, process Mandatory Health Forms, check in patients and other general front desk duties.

Samantha Smith

Samantha A. Smith, MPH, CHES
Associate Director of Health Promotion

Samantha joined UMBC in 2016.  She received a BS in Human Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013. Samantha went on to receive her Master of Public Health degree from Emory University in 2015. Prior to joining UMBC, Samantha work with the United States Army Public Health Center. Samantha’s areas of expertise are in public health program development, health education, and program assessment. Her areas of interest include: college health, sexual health, and research methods. Samantha is completing a doctoral degree in Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Alex Nguyen

Alexandra Nguyen
Health Educator

Alex has been with UMBC since 2014: first, as an undergraduate student majoring in Health Administration and Policy  on the Public Health track and minoring in Social Welfare; then, as a graduate student studying public policy; and finally, as the health educator for the Office of Health Promotion. She is an advocate of health equity and social justice. You can find her in the office pursuing her passion by working with Peer Health Educators to promote public health and safety for the UMBC community.

Andrea Thornton

Andrea Thornton
Massage Therapist

Andrea is a nationally certified and state licensed Massage Therapist. Using such techniques as Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy, Andrea aids the body’s natural healing process for chronic muscle pain, TMJ disorder, headaches, arthritis, repetitive use syndromes, and sports related injuries.

Yu She

Yu She

Yu She has been practicing Acupuncture part-time at University Health Services since September 2002. She received her Diplomate in Acupuncture in 2000. She also received her M.Ac. in Acupuncture from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (now Tai Sophia Institute) in February 2000.

Professional Liability

Medical Assistants, Clinic Coordinators, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians employed by UMBC’s University Health Services are provided Professional Liability protection by the University System.

Physicians contracted to provide services at UMBC’s University Health Services will maintain professional liability insurance at an amount determined by the Director, University Health Services, and University of Maryland Family Medicine.

At any time a Nurse Practitioner or Physician receives notice of a pending malpractice claim occurring from services provided at UMBC they will immediately notify the Director, University Health Services.

Records of any patient with a pending malpractice claim will be maintained in a locked file by the Director, University Health Services.

Director, University Health Services, will notify the Vice President of Student Affairs any time he/she receives notification of a pending malpractice claim.

Should UMBC administration be notified of a pending malpractice claim they will immediately notify the Director, University Health Services, who will then notify the involved practitioners(s).
