Meet Our Staff

Bruce Herman

Bruce Herman, Ph.D.
Director of Health & Counseling

Dr. Herman graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He has been working in Higher Education for over 30 years and has worked extensively in the areas of mental health and health promotion. He came to UMBC in July 2012. Before UMBC he worked at Towson University Counseling Center from 1999-2012. Prior to that, from 1991-1998 Dr. Herman worked as a Psychologist at Loyola College in Maryland. Dr. Herman has also taught in the Psychology and/or Education Departments at Towson University, Loyola College and University of Illinois. He is interested in campus health promotion and in providing services that reach, serve and support the success and health of UMBC’s diverse population.

Clinical Staff

Dr. Vivienne Rose, MD
Medical Director

Dr. Vivienne Rose has been practicing at UMBC’s University Health Services since 1998. She got her M.D. from University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1992. She completed her residency at the Department of Family Medicine at University of Maryland Medical Center from 1992 to 1995. She has been employed at the Department of Family Medicine at University of Maryland School of Medicine since 1995. She has a special interest in women’s health and is certified as a Diplomat in the area of bariatric medicine.

Vic Madrid, MD (Physician)

Dr. Vic Madrid joined the UMBC UHS team in August 2018. He has been an active practicing family physician in Catonsville for many years. He received his BS degree in 1991 and his MD degree in 1995, both from the Ohio State University. He completed his residency training in 1998 at the Fairview Family Medicine Residency Program in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Madrid is board certified in Family Medicine and lives in Catonsville with his wife and 3 children

Cassandra “Sandy” Riggs, RN, MS, CRNP
Associate Director

Sandy has been a nurse practitioner at UMBC since 1994. She received her BS in nursing from The University of Arizona after first getting her BS in psychology from the University of Alabama. Later she went on to receive her Masters of Science in Nursing and her Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from The University of Virginia. Prior to UMBC, Sandy worked for the Indian Health Service before starting her career in college health at Johns Hopkins University. Since becoming an assistant director in 2013, Sandy splits her time between administrative work and patient care.

Marie Holmes, RMA
Clinic Coordinator

Marie has been with UHS since 2010. She is a registered Medical Assistant who has worked in the healthcare field since 2004. She became Clinical Coordinator shortly after her arrival in 2010. Her main focus is to provide exceptional care and service to the students, faculty and staff at UMBC.

Melissa Paterakis RN, MSN, CRNP

Melissa is a Baltimore native and has been at UMBC since 2016.  She received her undergraduate degree in Biology at Dickinson College.  She is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University’s undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner.  Prior to UMBC, she worked in the Emergency Department at Children’s National and in clinical research at Johns Hopkins Allergy and Immunology.

Cynthia “Cindy” Vogelpohl, RN

Cindy has been in healthcare for 16 years. Prior to becoming a registered nurse, she worked in administration for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for 4 years. She has been a registered nurse in Frederick County since 2004, working as a Medical Surgical Nurse for Frederick Memorial Hospital and as a Case Manager/Nurse for Hospice of Frederick County. Cindy also worked as a School Nurse for Carroll County Public Schools for the last 4 years and joined the UMBC health care team in the fall of 2016.  Cindy is currently furthering her nursing education at Frostburg State University working towards her Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner.


Toni Anne Boyajian, RN, MSN, CRNP

Toni is a nurse practitioner who joined UMBC in 2016. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Villanova University. While she was an active duty nurse officer in the Air Force, she received her Masters of Science in Nursing as a family nurse practitioner from University of South Alabama. She has received training in primary care, women’s health and anxiety/depression. She has a passion for holistic care and functional medicine.

Cheryl Benitez
Coordinator of Insurance and Billing

Cheryl has worked at UMBC since 2007. She supervises all insurance and billing functions within UHS. She can help answer questions you have about insurance or billing issues.

Annette Jackson

Annette Jackson
Insurance Specialist

Nettie has worked at UMBC since 2002. She currently serves as the student health insurance plan coordinator. Nettie will gladly help you with any questions regarding the school health insurance plan, and any other insurance and billing questions.

Gladies Barrozo
Office Clerk II

Gladies started at Universtiy Health Services in May 2017 as Office Clerk II.   She can help you with scheduling appointments, process Mandatory Health Forms, check in patients and other general front desk duties.

Je’Nae Parker
Office Manager

Je’Nae joined UMBC in 2017. She previously worked at University of Maryland Faculty Physicians includes providing administrative support. Her experience includes supervising call center staff, insurance billing and front desk operations. She received her BS in Applied Psychology from Coppin State University and is expecting her MS in Human Services Administration with a concentration in Health Care Delivery Systems in May 2018 from the University of Baltimore.

Dot Meile
Business Service Specialist

Dot has worked at UMBC since 2001. She orders vaccines, medical supplies and other important products to keep UMBC students healthy. She also works in procurement, handles the payroll process and does new hire paperwork for UHS.

Rose Gore

Rose Gore
Front Desk Supervisor

Rose started at University Health Services in October 2010. Rose can help you with scheduling appointments, updating students medical records and answer questions for UHS and Health Education. She likes to assist the students and make them feel comfortable while they are at UMBC.

Samantha Smith

Samantha A. Smith, MPH, CHES
Assistant Director of Health Promotion

Samantha joined UMBC in 2016.  She received a BS in Human Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013. Samantha went on to receive her Master of Public Health degree from Emory University in 2015. Prior to joining UMBC, Samantha work with the United States Army Public Health Center. Samantha’s areas of expertise are in public health program development, health education, and program assessment. Her areas of interest include: college health, sexual health, and research methods.

Andrea Thornton
Massage Therapist

Andrea is a nationally certified and state licensed Massage Therapist. Using such techniques as Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy, Andrea aids the body’s natural healing process for chronic muscle pain, TMJ disorder, headaches, arthritis, repetitive use syndromes, and sports related injuries.

Yu She

Yu She

Yu She has been practicing Acupuncture part-time at University Health Services since September 2002. She received her Diplomate in Acupuncture in 2000. She also received her M.Ac. in Acupuncture from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (now Tai Sophia Institute) in February 2000.

Professional Liability

Medical Assistants, Clinic Coordinators and Nurse Practitioners employed by UMBC’s University Health Services are provided Professional Liability protection by the University System.

Physicians contracted to provide services at UMBC’s University Health Services will maintain professional liability insurance at an amount determined by the Director, University Health Services, and University of Maryland Family Medicine.

At any time a Nurse Practitioner or Physician receives notice of a pending malpractice claim occurring from services provided at UMBC they will immediately notify the Director, University Health Services.

Records of any patient with a pending malpractice claim will be maintained in a locked file by the Director, University Health Services.

Director, University Health Services, will notify the Vice President of Student Affairs any time he/she receives notification of a pending malpractice claim.

Should UMBC administration be notified of a pending malpractice claim they will immediately notify the Director, University Health Services, who will then notify the involved practitioners(s).
